Chapter 1 - ARE THEY MY SONS

Celeste Vaughn slammed a watermelon against Mara Reed’s roadside counter.

The rind split.

Red flesh and juice exploded across the faded wood.

“This trash is your life now?”

Mara pulled Noah and Lucas behind her.

“Stop.”

Celeste grabbed another melon.

Crushed it against the edge.

“That feeds my boys!”

Celeste smiled.

“Then watch them go hungry.”

Fourteen years of fear tightened inside Mara’s chest.

She did not step backward.

Her right hand remained inside the pocket of her faded dress.

Wrapped around a small digital recorder.

Running.

Celeste swept three more melons onto the pavement.

Then pulled a thick bundle of cash from her handbag and shoved it against Mara’s chest.

“Take it and disappear.”

Mara let the money fall.

Celeste leaned closer.

“Or your sons will suffer.”

A man shouted from behind them.

“Celeste! Back away!”

Mara stopped breathing.

Ethan Cole crossed the gravel from a charcoal Bentley.

Forty-three.

Older.

Harder around the eyes.

Still unmistakable.

He stepped between them.

Then turned toward Mara.

Everything left his face.

“Mara?”

She could not speak.

One of the boys moved in front of her.

“Stay away from my mom.”

Ethan looked at Noah.

Then Lucas.

Same gray eyes he saw every morning in a mirror.

Same narrow chin.

Same small indentation beside the left eyebrow.

He stared.

“How old are you?”

“Fourteen.”

Both boys answered almost together.

Ethan’s expression collapsed.

He looked back at Mara.

“Mara…”

His voice cracked.

“Are they my sons?”

Celeste stepped backward.

Mara slowly pulled the recorder from her pocket.

Celeste saw it.

Her face went white.

Mara pressed stop.

Then she answered Ethan.

“Yes.”

The word broke something in him.

Celeste whispered:

“You’re lying.”

Mara looked at her.

“No.”

May you like

Then she held up the recorder.

“And now you finally made the mistake I waited fifteen years for.”
