Chapter 2 - WHY ETHAN WAS THERE

Ethan had not followed Celeste because he suspected Mara was alive.

He did not.

For fifteen years, he believed his first wife had disappeared after stealing from Atlas Agricultural Systems.

Not convicted.

Not even formally charged.

But implicated badly enough that every memory became contaminated.

Three weeks before the roadside confrontation, Atlas hired a new chief audit officer.

A legacy vendor review uncovered unusual payments tied to an old company:

Carolina Field Logistics.

The vendor had received millions over many years.

Some invoices were legitimate.

Some looked duplicated.

Several recent invoices carried vague emergency-service descriptions.

Celeste had been Atlas’s CFO when the vendor relationship began.

She was no longer an executive, but remained a board observer through family holdings and Ethan’s wife.

The audit team asked routine questions.

Celeste became unusually defensive.

Then, on the morning of the confrontation, she left an Atlas strategy meeting immediately after reading an email.

Ethan asked:

“Everything okay?”

“Family issue.”

“What family?”

She did not answer.

Ten minutes later she drove away in her black SUV.

Ethan already had doubts about the vendor review.

He followed.

Not secretly forever.

Long enough to see where she was going.

A rural highway outside Charlotte.

Then he saw the roadside stand.

Then Celeste destroying it.

Then Mara.

Alive.

The woman he had mourned.

Hated.

Missed.

Divorced by publication after years of failed searches.

The woman he had once believed chose money over him.

Now standing behind two boys with his face.

Then Mara said:

“The recorder isn’t the only evidence.”

Celeste snapped:

“Don’t listen to her.”

Ethan turned slowly.

“Why are you here?”

Celeste recovered.

“She contacted me.”

Mara nodded.

“Yes.”

Ethan looked at her.

“Why?”

“Because your auditors finally found the vendor I tried to warn you about fifteen years ago.”

Silence.

Then Mara said:

“I wanted to know whether Celeste would still threaten me if she thought nobody else was listening.”

Ethan looked at the recorder.

Then at the smashed watermelons.

Celeste said:

“This is blackmail.”

May you like

Mara almost laughed.

“No. This is me letting you talk.”
