Chapter 5 - ETHAN'S VERSION OF THE SAME WEEK
Ethan returned home the next morning and found Mara gone.
Her clothes mostly there.
Wedding photos there.
Passport gone.
One overnight bag gone.
He found the voicemail.
Called back.
Nothing.
Then Celeste arrived with Atlas counsel.
The internal review showed approximately $1.9 million in suspicious vendor payments.
Mara’s approval appeared repeatedly.
Ethan said:
“That means she approved invoices.”
Celeste answered:
“It means more than that.”
Did it?
At the time, nobody knew.
Then counsel said Mara needed to be interviewed.
They could not find her.
Ethan called her father.
Thomas lied.
“I haven’t seen her.”
Why?
Mara begged him.
Ethan remembered the pause in Thomas’s voice for years.
Then the board demanded distance.
Ethan recused himself from the internal investigation because Mara was his wife.
Correct.
Outside counsel continued.
The review concluded:
control failures,
possible vendor fraud,
and substantial evidence requiring further investigation.
It did not conclude Mara stole the money.
That distinction disappeared socially.
Employees whispered.
Mara fled.
Therefore:
guilty.
Ethan fought that assumption for months.
Then one year became two.
No call.
No letter he received.
No appearance.
His faith broke.
Eventually Atlas’s insurer and outside counsel pursued civil recovery against several vendors.
Carolina Field Logistics dissolved.
No useful assets.
No criminal case against Mara was ever filed.
Ethan did not know that Celeste had told Mara otherwise.
After four years of failed attempts to locate her, he petitioned for divorce using service by publication and other required procedures.
The court granted it.
He married Celeste six years after Mara disappeared.
Not because she seduced him immediately.
Because over years Celeste became:
competent,
loyal,
present.
