Chapter 11 - CELESTE'S DEFENSE

Celeste did not confess.
Her lawyers built a serious defense.
She argued:
vendor payments were messy but tied to rapid growth,
Graham Vale provided legitimate services,
her beneficial interest in one holding structure was disclosed to private advisers though not clearly to Atlas,
Mara’s approvals showed shared control failures,
and the recorder captured anger, not a financial confession.
Some points were valid.
Then prosecutors focused on recent conduct.
That avoided relying only on fifteen-year-old events.
Several successor-vendor invoices from the previous four years contained false service documentation.
Wire records linked proceeds into an entity benefiting Celeste.
Recent enough.
Specific enough.
The old Mara story became background and evidence of pattern, not the only prosecutable conduct.
Then Celeste challenged Mara’s credibility.
“She disappeared for fifteen years.”
True.
“She hid two children from their father.”
True.
“She contacted me privately before going to law enforcement.”
True.
Mara answered all three.
“I was afraid.”
Not a perfect explanation.
A human one.
Then Celeste said through counsel:
“She wants revenge because Ethan married me.”
Mara laughed when Priya read it.
“I don’t want Ethan.”
That mattered.
She had loved him.
Once.
May you like
But fifteen years had happened.
There was no frozen marriage waiting under the road dust.
