Chapter 8 - THE RECORDING

Mara’s recording lasted eleven minutes.
The viral part would have been the threat.
It never became public.
Her lawyer kept it private.
The more important lines came before Ethan arrived.
Celeste:
“You should have stayed gone.”
Mara:
“Why?”
Celeste:
“Because you built a life.”
Mara:
“You built it for me.”
Celeste:
“I gave you a way out.”
Then:
“You signed those approvals.”
Mara:
“You made the invoices false.”
Celeste:
“You can’t prove that.”
Mara:
“I can prove routing changed after some approvals.”
Long silence.
Then Celeste said:
“You have no idea how many people signed off over the years.”
That sentence mattered.
Plural.
Over the years.
Not one historical incident.
Mara asked:
“How much?”
Celeste refused.
Then later:
“Atlas grew. Nobody missed it.”
Again.
Not a confession to a number.
But revealing.
Finally came:
“Take the money and disappear.”
Then:
“Or your sons will suffer.”
Priya listened twice.
“This helps.”
Ethan asked:
“Helps how much?”
“Enough for warrants and subpoenas if investigators already have independent financial anomalies.”
Not enough for a movie arrest by sunset.
Good.
Then Atlas’s audit committee did something Ethan did not enjoy.
It removed him from the investigation.
Because Celeste was his current wife.
Mara was his former wife.
The boys might be his children.
Conflict everywhere.
Independent directors retained outside forensic counsel.
Ethan said:
“I founded Atlas.”
The audit chair replied:
“Exactly why you cannot control this.”

For once, Ethan accepted powerlessness.
It was appropriate.
