Chapter 4 - THE CHOICE MARA MADE

Mara did not run that night.

First she went home.

Ethan was not there.

He was at an investor dinner in Chicago.

She called.

His phone went to voicemail.

She left one message:

“I need you to call me before you talk to Celeste.”

Then Celeste called her.

“Do not make this worse.”

Mara hung up.

An hour later, a company legal assistant delivered a sealed packet to the house.

Inside:

a preservation notice,

instructions not to destroy financial records,

and notice that outside counsel had begun reviewing Carolina Field Logistics.

All real.

All routine in a serious internal investigation.

To Mara, after Celeste’s threat, it looked like the beginning of prosecution.

Then her phone buzzed.

Unknown number.

A photograph of Ethan leaving the investor dinner beside Atlas’s general counsel.

Message:

He chose the company.

Mara now knows the photo proved nothing.

At twenty-five, pregnant and terrified, it felt like confirmation.

She packed one bag.

Drove first to her father’s farm in North Carolina.

Planned to stay one night.

Then she became sick on the road and discovered she was carrying twins.

By the time Ethan called repeatedly the next morning, Mara’s phone was off.

Why not call later?

Shame.

Fear.

And a second message from Celeste two days later.

If you come back, the approval trail becomes a criminal referral.

Then:

If you stay gone, Atlas can survive this quietly.

Mara believed her.

Not forever.

But long enough for silence to harden.

Her father, Thomas Reed, wanted her to hire a lawyer.

Mara refused.

He said:

“You cannot disappear because someone showed you paperwork.”

She answered:

“I’m protecting Ethan.”

Thomas said:

“Maybe you’re protecting the wrong person.”

May you like

He was right.

But Mara did not know that yet.
