Chapter 13 - THE BROTHER WHO SIGNED ONE PAGE
Michael stood.
“No.”
Richard kept looking at him.
Michael’s face changed.
Then he sat again.
“I signed a scenario authorization.”
Daniel stared.
“When?”
“Six months ago.”
“Why?”
“Dad asked me to.”
Richard shook his head.
Michael stopped.
“What?”
Richard typed:
I ASKED YOU TO REVIEW.
NOT AUTHORIZE.
Michael closed his eyes.
Charles had presented Project Mirror as a governance contingency program.
Michael signed one page.
Approval to implement “trust-stability measures” if reputational crisis threatened a transaction.
He never read the appendix.
Daniel almost laughed.
The family’s entire disaster rested on people signing what they thought they understood.
Sophia looked at her husband.
“You gave Charles authority.”
“I didn’t know.”
“That’s what you accuse Daniel of saying.”
Michael flinched.
True.
Daniel had hidden surveillance because he believed he knew best.
Michael had signed authority because he trusted Charles.
Sophia exploited both.
Then Michael did something Sophia did not expect.
He filed to suspend his own temporary trustee rights.
“If Daniel is suspended, I don’t take control.”
Sophia stared.
“What are you doing?”
“Removing the prize.”
“The company needs the NorthBridge deal.”
“Then the deal can survive independent review.”
“It may not.”
“Then it may not deserve to.”
Sophia’s face changed.
Not sadness.
Rage.
“You weak coward.”
Michael looked at her.
Maybe the marriage ended in that second.
Then Daniel said:
“I’ll suspend my authority too.”
Michael looked at him.
Both brothers.
No winner.
Independent trustee.
Charles’s strategy collapsed.
Sophia’s fee became uncertain.
NorthBridge lost the automatic closing window.
Then Naomi received NorthBridge’s revised letter.
They were not withdrawing.
They were willing to renegotiate.
But one condition changed everything.
They wanted Charles Keene removed from all legal representation.
