Chapter 9 - THE VOICE MEMO

Sophia denied recording the memo.

Then heard her own voice.

She stopped.

Michael played it again.

“If Daniel is out by midnight, Charles says the trust shifts automatically.”

Another voice answered.

Charles.

“We are discussing legal mechanics, not strategy.”

Sophia:

“I understand.”

Charles:

“Do you?”

Sophia laughed.

Then:

“I understand enough.”

The memo ended.

Charles looked furious.

“That conversation is privileged.”

Sophia stared at him.

“You recorded me?”

“I did not.”

Michael asked:

“Then who did?”

No answer.

Naomi analyzed metadata.

Recorded on Sophia’s phone.

Three days earlier.

Deleted.

Recovered from cloud backup.

Sophia had recorded it herself.

Why?

Insurance.

Daniel understood.

She did not fully trust Charles.

Sophia finally admitted:

“I record important legal conversations.”

Michael laughed bitterly.

“Apparently everyone in this family records everyone.”

Nobody disagreed.

Then Sophia attacked.

“Charles explained a trust clause. That is not conspiracy.”

Correct.

Charles added:

“I never instructed Sophia to fabricate an assault.”

Also possibly correct.

Daniel asked Sophia directly:

“Did Charles tell you to accuse me?”

“No.”

“Did anyone?”

“No.”

“Then why did you do it?”

Sophia looked at Michael.

Then Daniel.

“Because the family would never remove you for anything else.”

Silence.

There.

Not full confession.

But motive.

She continued.

“You’ve controlled everything since your father got sick. Michael gets a title. You get power.”

Michael looked away.

Sophia had touched something real again.

Daniel asked:

“So you framed me to give Michael control?”

“To give him the authority he should already have.”

“And your fee?”

“I earned it.”

Same answer.

Then Naomi’s analyst entered with the deleted voice memo’s share history.

Before Sophia erased it, she sent a copy to one person.

Not Michael.

Not Charles.

Not NorthBridge.

Recipient:

RICHARD BROOKS.

Daniel’s father.

The man recovering from a stroke in a private care facility.

Everyone stared.

Sophia whispered:

“That’s impossible.”

Daniel looked at her.

“You sent my father the memo?”

Sophia shook her head.

May you like

“No.”

The message log said she did.
