Chapter 4 - THE WOMAN WITH THE BETTER STORY
Sophia’s statement was careful.
Too careful.
She did not deny tearing her dress.
She admitted it.
Police looked confused.
Then she explained:
“Daniel told me he had evidence Michael was cheating.”
Michael stared.
Daniel did not move.
Sophia continued.
“He told me to meet him upstairs. Then he revealed he was recording me. I panicked.”
One officer asked:
“Why did you scream that he assaulted you?”
“I wanted Michael to come in.”
“Why tear your dress?”
Sophia began crying.
“Because Daniel told me nobody would believe he was threatening me unless I looked frightened.”
Daniel almost laughed.
It was brilliant.
She had converted the footage from proof of fabrication into proof of manipulation.
Then:
“He said if I followed the script, he would show me evidence about my husband.”
Michael looked at Daniel.
“You told her I was cheating?”
“No.”
Sophia immediately produced another screenshot.
A message from an unknown number:
Daniel has proof Michael is seeing someone. Meet him upstairs alone. He’ll explain.
No sender identity.
No link to Daniel.
But enough to create fog.
Daniel told police:
“She knew about the camera before tonight.”
Sophia turned.
“How?”
He had no proof yet.
Then Sophia said:
“Ask him why he has been secretly investigating his own family.”
Michael looked away.
That hurt.
Because it was true.
Daniel had hired Lucas Vane without telling the board.
He had monitored access logs.
Tracked leaked documents.
Set the hidden camera.
All because he believed someone was compromising the trust.
He was right.
But secrecy looked different when exposed by an enemy.
The police did not arrest anyone.
They took statements.
Preserved the video.
Then Charles Keene spoke quietly with the officers.
Daniel watched.
Too familiar.
Too comfortable.
After they left, Michael asked:
“Does the trust clause trigger now?”
Charles answered:
“Potentially.”
Daniel stared.
“Potentially?”
“A formal complaint exists.”
“Based on a claim contradicted by video.”
“Which Sophia says was part of a setup.”
Michael swore.
Charles continued.
“The prudent move is temporary suspension until independent review.”
Daniel looked at him.
“Convenient.”
Charles’s expression did not change.
“I don’t make the trust rules.”
Daniel smiled coldly.
“You wrote them.”
Charles stopped.
Only for a second.
Then Michael’s phone buzzed.
NorthBridge counsel.

They wanted confirmation of the morning vote.
Someone had already told them Daniel might be suspended.
