Chapter 10 - NATHAN LEARNS WHAT HIS ABSENCE COST

Nathan stopped saying:

“I should have known.”

Not because guilt disappeared.

Because Lucy became angry.

“You keep making yourself the center.”

Nathan looked at her.

They sat in a rehabilitation apartment where Lucy was learning to eat regularly again.

She continued:

“I needed you. Yes.”

He swallowed.

“I know.”

“But I also need you to stop acting like you could’ve magically seen through every lie from another country.”

“I trusted them.”

“So did I.”

That silenced him.

Lucy continued:

“I trusted Theresa because she was your mother.”

Nathan nodded.

“I trusted Brianna because she cried at our wedding.”

Another nod.

“I trusted Caleb because you trusted him.”

That hurt.

Then:

“If you make this only about you failing me, I have to comfort you.”

Nathan stared.

She was right.

He had turned remorse into labor for Lucy.

Again.

He said:

“Okay.”

Then:

“What do you need?”

“Separate account.”

“Done.”

“A place they can’t enter.”

“Done.”

“No family business.”

“Done.”

“And I’m not moving back in with you yet.”

That one hurt.

Nathan answered:

“Okay.”

Good.

Love without control.

He was learning too.

Nathan also changed how he handled money.

He opened a separate marital recovery account.

Then gave Lucy sole login access to hers.

No shared passwords.

No mother as emergency contact.

No sibling as backup signer.

When Nathan needed to send money, he asked:

“Where do you want it?”

The first time, Lucy almost cried.

Not because of the amount.

Because nobody had asked destination before.

Then she said:

“My account.”

Nathan answered:

“Okay.”

May you like

Simple.

That simplicity became part of recovery.
