Chapter 7 - THE SIGNATURE LUCY REFUSED

Theresa eventually needed Lucy’s signature.

Not for the house.

For a commercial guaranty.

Carter Harvest sought a $400,000 equipment line.

The lender wanted additional guarantors.

Theresa listed Nathan.

Could not get his signature overseas.

Then listed Lucy.

Lucy refused.

That was when the deprivation became worse.

Theresa said:

“If the business fails, Nathan loses everything.”

Lucy answered:

“Then tell him.”

Theresa:

“He’ll blame you.”

Lucy laughed.

“For what?”

“For not helping his family.”

Then Brianna said:

“You already ate through enough of his money.”

Lucy stared.

The cruelty was strategic.

They wanted her ashamed of needing food while they spent six figures.

Then Caleb brought a guaranty to the bedroom.

“Sign.”

“No.”

“Just sign.”

“No.”

He kicked a chair.

Did not strike Lucy.

But blocked the door.

She screamed.

Theresa came in.

Said:

“Stop embarrassing yourself.”

Lucy still refused.

Good.

No signature.

That refusal may have saved her from becoming legally tied to Carter Harvest debt.

Then Caleb forged one anyway.

Not a perfect forgery.

A scanned signature copied from an old tax form.

The lender flagged it.

Requested live verification.

The loan never funded.

The lender’s compliance officer later became a key witness.

Her name was Rebecca Shaw.

She had called the phone number listed for Lucy.

Theresa answered.

Rebecca asked to speak directly with the guarantor.

Theresa said Lucy was sleeping.

Rebecca called again the next day.

Brianna answered.

“Lucy’s sick.”

Rebecca asked for a video verification.

No one responded.

Then Rebecca emailed:

WE CANNOT PROCEED WITHOUT DIRECT CONFIRMATION FROM LUCY CARTER.

Caleb replied:

SHE HAS ALREADY SIGNED.

Rebecca answered:

THEN CONFIRMATION SHOULD BE EASY.

That ended the application.

Rebecca later testified that the insistence on live verification was routine.

Nothing heroic.

Just procedure.

But routine procedure blocked a forged guaranty worth $400,000.

Nathan remembered that.

Systems failed Lucy in some places.

In others, one person simply following a rule protected her.

That failure accelerated everything.

Carter Harvest was almost out of cash.

Nathan was due home soon.

Lucy knew too much.

Theresa needed silence.
