Chapter 9 - THE EMPLOYEE WHO KEPT THE LABELS
The fired Carter Harvest employee was named Owen Price.
Thirty-one.
Quality-control technician.
He kept copies of batch records after Caleb fired him.
Not to blackmail.
To protect himself.
He had warned Caleb that date changes were improper.
Caleb responded:
“Everybody does it.”
Owen disagreed.
Then Theresa told him:
“Family ownership is taking responsibility for quality.”
Owen asked:
“Does Nathan Carter know he owns this?”
Silence.
That was when Owen became suspicious.
He searched public filings.
Nathan was not an owner.
Then he saw Lucy once at the warehouse.
Thin, anxious, carrying invoices.
She whispered:
“Can you help me call my husband?”
Owen gave her his phone.
Brianna saw.
Took it.
Then told Owen Lucy was mentally unstable.
Owen had already been fired shortly after the label dispute, but he returned to collect final paperwork and saw Lucy then.
He called adult protective services anonymously.
That report existed.
Why had nothing happened?
Address confusion.
Theresa told the visiting caseworker Lucy had moved temporarily.
Lucy was locked in the detached guest room during the visit.
The caseworker left a card.
Brianna threw it away.
Then Owen called again.
This time Nathan arrived before the second follow-up.
The system had been closer to finding Lucy than anyone knew.
Owen also preserved photographs of the relabeling process.
Not dramatic.
Boxes.
Date stickers.
A spreadsheet.
A printer.
But one image showed Caleb pointing toward a new date label while telling an employee:
“Use these.”
Another showed Brianna placing premium Carter Harvest sleeves over manufacturer packaging.
The company’s lawyer later argued relabeling itself was not necessarily illegal if safety standards were met.
Correct.
The problem was the false shelf-life representations to retailers.
Again, the case lived in details.
Owen had not uncovered poisoned food.
