Chapter 13 - THE HOUSE NATHAN NEVER BOUGHT

The original farmhouse eventually sold to someone else.

Nathan drove past it once.

Stopped.

White siding.

Two acres.

New family on the porch.

For months, he thought it symbolized failure.

Then Lucy asked:

“Why do you keep checking that listing?”

Nathan laughed bitterly.

“I wanted that life.”

She looked at him.

“No.”

He frowned.

“You wanted a house.”

“What’s the difference?”

“A lot.”

That stayed with him.

A house was not safety.

Money was not safety.

Family escrow was not safety.

Then Lucy found a small rental cottage herself.

One bedroom.

Sunroom.

No guest wing.

No Theresa.

Nathan paid nothing toward it until Lucy asked.

She wanted the lease in her own name.

He supported that.

Later, restitution and asset sales recovered part of the stolen money.

The SUV sold.

Jewelry sold.

Warehouse equipment liquidated.

Brianna surrendered luxury purchases.

Caleb’s watch sold.

Not everything came back.

Carter Harvest losses were real.

Money spent on failed operations was gone.

Nathan hated it.

Lucy said:

“I’d rather lose money than lose more years chasing it.”

He listened.

That was another kind of wealth.
