Chapter 5 - THE HAIRCUT BRIANNA CALLED BRAND MANAGEMENT
Brianna shaved Lucy’s head because of a photograph.
A retailer representative was scheduled to tour the Carter Harvest warehouse.
Theresa wanted the family present.
Why Lucy?
Because Nathan’s money had funded the operation, and Theresa planned to describe the company as “a Carter family enterprise.”
Lucy refused.
She said she would tell the retailer where the capital came from.
Theresa canceled the tour.
Then Brianna took photos of Lucy crying.
One showed Lucy pulling at her own hair in frustration.
Brianna sent it to Theresa with:
SHE LOOKS INSANE.
A week later, Brianna said Lucy had lice.
False.
She brought clippers.
Lucy resisted.
Theresa held her shoulders.
Caleb stood in the doorway laughing.
Brianna shaved her head.
Then took another photograph.
This one became part of a private family narrative that Lucy was “having some kind of breakdown.”
Nathan stared when detectives showed him the recovered image.
No gore.
No injury.
Just Lucy in a chair.
Head shaved.
Eyes empty.
Brianna smiling behind her.
Nathan left the interview room.
He stood in a hallway for six minutes.
Then returned.
Calm.
Detective Mara Lewis noticed.
“You okay?”
“No.”
“Can you continue?”
“Yes.”
That mattered.
