Chapter 12 - THE CHARGES
Prosecutors separated the conduct carefully.
Theresa:
financial exploitation,
fraud,
forgery-related conduct,
unlawful coercion,
abuse and neglect-related charges.
Caleb:
fraud,
forgery,
financial theft,
coercive conduct,
evidence issues.
Brianna:
participation in financial misuse,
abuse-related conduct,
evidence destruction attempts.
Not every charge was equal.
Not every person knew everything.
Brianna did not know Theresa had used the house offer as future collateral strategy.
Caleb did.
Caleb did not know about every food restriction.
Brianna did.
Theresa knew almost all of it.
That hierarchy mattered.
Then prosecutors played Caleb’s patio statement.
“Bullshit! It was only five hundred thousand!”
His lawyer argued it showed family awareness of Nathan’s transfers, not theft.
True.
Then bank records showed Caleb received $39,000 personally.
Then messages:
CALEB:
How much is left in Nate's house pile?
THERESA:
Enough if you stop spending.
CALEB:
Lol.
Awareness became harder to minimize.
Then Lucy testified.
She did not dramatize.
She described hunger.
One meal.
Then another missed.
The locked pantry.
The shaved head.
The fake business paperwork.
The guaranty she refused.
Then prosecutor asked:
“Why didn’t you leave?”
Lucy answered:
“They had my phone, my cards, my keys, and I believed Nathan thought I was the problem.”
Control was not one lock.
Defense attorneys later challenged the word “starvation.”
They said Lucy had access to water.
Sometimes meals.
Occasional snacks.
No one chained the refrigerator.
The prosecutor responded with pattern:
pantry locks,
withheld cards,
restricted phone,
blocked exits,
punishment meals,
messages acknowledging weakness.
Lucy did not need to prove every calorie was controlled.
She needed to show the system.
Then she described one night.
She found half a sandwich in the trash.
Ate it.
Brianna caught her.
Instead of giving Lucy food, Brianna laughed and took a photograph.
That image was recovered.
It showed no injury.
Only humiliation.
The jury looked away.
