Chapter 1 - THE CRIB ON THE LAWN

Claire Harlow knew something was wrong before she reached the front gate.

The nursery curtains were open.

They were never open in the afternoon because Lily napped then.

A white crib mattress leaned against the side of the house.

Then Claire saw Daniel.

Black suit.

No tie.

Jaw clenched.

Vanessa Hale stood beside him in a white coat over a green dress.

Claire stopped walking.

Vanessa was not supposed to be there.

Not at the house.

Not near Lily.

Not after Claire had found the hotel receipts two weeks earlier.

Claire’s marriage had been bad for months.

But she had not yet said the word divorce.

Daniel had.

Only once.

During an argument.

Then he took it back.

Claire believed there was still something left to understand.

She was wrong.

Lily sat inside her crib near the open patio doors.

One year old.

Cream dress.

Holding a stuffed rabbit.

Daniel grabbed the crib rails.

Claire shouted:

“Daniel!”

He lifted.

HURLED the crib onto the lawn.

Wood cracked.

The mattress flipped.

Lily had already been pulled free by Vanessa.

For one second Claire thought that meant Vanessa was protecting her.

Then Vanessa shoved Lily down onto the grass.

Not hard enough to throw her far.

Hard enough to make the baby fall backward.

Lily screamed.

“Dada! Dada!”

Claire’s vision went white.

She rushed forward.

Scooped Lily into her arms.

Checked her head.

Arms.

Face.

No blood.

No obvious injury.

Only terror.

Claire looked at Vanessa.

“YOU HIT MY BABY?!”

Vanessa smirked.

“Cry about it.”

Claire moved before thinking.

One slap.

Hard.

Vanessa staggered.

“TOUCH HER AGAIN!”

Daniel stepped between them.

Then shoved Claire backward.

“DON’T TOUCH VANESSA!”

Claire stared at her husband.

Lily cried against her chest.

Daniel pointed toward the gate.

“GET OUT!”

Claire could not speak.

Vanessa moved behind him.

“You heard him.”

Then engines roared.

Three black cars raced through the gate.

Daniel turned.

The first rear door flew open.

Richard Harlow stepped out.

Sixty-two.

Charcoal suit.

Expression like stone.

He saw:

the shattered crib,

Lily crying,

Claire trembling,

Vanessa behind Daniel.

Then Richard shouted:

“WHO TOUCHED MY GRANDDAUGHTER?!”

May you like

Daniel froze.

And Claire realized her father had not arrived by accident.
