Chapter 1 - HE'S BEEN WITH MY BROTHER

Claire Morgan slapped Daniel Reed before he could explain why a visibly pregnant woman was standing in their living room.

“YOU LIAR!”

Daniel recoiled.

Claire shoved both hands against his chest.

“YOU GOT HER PREGNANT?!”

“NO! CLAIRE, LISTEN!”

Daniel caught Claire’s wrists.

She ripped free and shoved him backward.

“WE’RE GETTING MARRIED!”

Megan Cole stepped forward.

Claire whipped toward her and pointed at her belly.

“HOW LONG HAVE YOU TWO BEEN SLEEPING TOGETHER?!”

Megan’s eyes widened.

“What?! No!”

Daniel went pale.

Claire yanked off her engagement ring and threw it at his chest.

“THEN WHO’S THE FATHER?!”

Megan pointed at Daniel.

“NOT HIM.”

Claire froze.

Daniel stepped toward Megan.

“DON’T SAY IT.”

Megan ignored him.

Claire turned slowly toward Daniel.

“What are you hiding?”

Daniel said nothing.

Megan looked directly at Claire.

“The baby isn’t his.”

Claire stared.

Megan pointed toward Daniel.

“He’s been with my brother.”

Silence.

Claire’s face drained.

“Your brother?”

Megan nodded.

“Ethan.”

Daniel closed his eyes.

Claire knew the name.

Ethan Cole.

Daniel’s college friend.

The man Daniel met for “late work dinners.”

The man who helped move furniture into this apartment.

The man Daniel said was practically family.

Claire looked at Daniel.

“How long?”

He did not answer fast enough.

Megan did.

“Almost two years.”

Claire stopped breathing.

She and Daniel had been engaged for fourteen months.

Daniel whispered:

“Claire—”

She stepped backward.

“Two years?”

He looked at the floor.

“Yes.”

Claire’s eyes moved around the luxurious apartment.

The furniture they chose.

The wedding invitations stacked beside the console.

The framed engagement photograph.

Everything suddenly looked staged.

Then Megan said:

“There’s something else.”

Daniel snapped:

“No.”

Megan looked at him.

“She deserves to know why you kept the engagement.”

Claire’s pain sharpened.

Claire also reviewed the wedding planner’s timeline.

Not for legal reasons.

For herself.

Daniel had approved:

flowers,

music,

seating,

menu,

photographer,

and honeymoon travel

while already sleeping with Ethan.

That fact felt almost impossible to reconcile.

Daniel explained:

“I kept thinking if I went through with it, maybe the part of me that wanted the wedding would become enough.”

Claire stared at him.

“You were testing your life on me.”

“Yes.”

That admission hurt more than another excuse would have.

Daniel had not only delayed honesty.

He had treated marriage as an experiment that might resolve his conflict after Claire was already committed.

The wedding had become a deadline he hoped would make the decision for him.

Claire said:

“You don’t marry someone to see if the promise starts feeling true again.”

Daniel nodded.

“I know that now.”

Again:

too late to save the relationship.

Not too late to understand the harm.

“Why?”

Daniel said:

“It’s complicated.”

Claire laughed once.

Broken.

“Then make it simple.”

Megan looked at the folder on the coffee table.

REED DIGITAL SYSTEMS — FOUNDER SHARE REDEMPTION.

Claire followed her eyes.

The apartment confrontation also produced one detail Claire did not understand until later.

Megan had not arrived to expose Daniel publicly.

She had texted him from downstairs:

I’m here. You tell her, or I will.

Daniel answered:

Ten minutes.

Then he opened the apartment door and found Claire already home.

He had expected her to be at a client dinner.

That was why Megan walked into a room with:

Claire,

Daniel,

wedding samples,

and an engagement photograph.

The timing made everything look like an affair with a pregnant woman.

Megan said:

“I should’ve led with Ethan.”

Claire stared.

“Yes.”

“I panicked.”

“So did I.”

That did not erase Claire’s humiliation.

May you like

But it made the pregnancy misunderstanding less like a staged trick and more like three people colliding with one secret Daniel had delayed too long.

And realized her engagement ring was not the only contract in the room.
