Chapter 6 - MEGAN'S ROLE
Claire initially hated Megan.
Not because Megan was pregnant.
Because Megan knew.
“How many times were you in this apartment?”
Megan answered:
“Three.”
“And you knew Daniel was with Ethan?”
“Yes.”
“You looked me in the face.”
“Yes.”
“Why didn’t you tell me?”
Megan looked ashamed.
“Because Ethan begged me not to.”
“That’s your excuse?”
“No.”
Megan did not hide behind loyalty.
She admitted she chose her brother over a woman she barely knew.
Then the choice became harder to defend as months passed.
Megan said:
“I kept thinking Daniel would tell you.”
Claire laughed bitterly.
“So did Ethan.”
“Yes.”
“Everyone waited for Daniel to become honest.”
“Yes.”
Megan’s silence hurt.
But she eventually broke it.
Not perfectly.
Not gently.
She walked into Claire’s living room while pregnant and detonated a secret.
Still, without her, Daniel might have delayed again.
Claire eventually said:
“You did the right thing late.”
Megan’s pregnancy created another layer of anger after the confrontation.
Claire had looked at a pregnant woman and instantly treated her as rival evidence.
She apologized for that separately.
“I pointed at your stomach like it proved something about you.”
Megan shrugged.
“You were blindsided.”
“That explains it.”
Megan smiled faintly.
“Not excuses it?”
“No.”
Megan laughed.
“You and Grace spend too much time together.”
Claire eventually met Luke too.
He was exactly what Megan had said:
her husband,
the baby’s father,
temporarily overseas when the confrontation happened.
No secret paternity.
No further twist.
That normality mattered.
The pregnancy was not a clue to Daniel’s hidden life.
Megan gave birth four months later.
Claire did not visit the hospital.
They were not close.
But Megan sent one message:
Lily arrived. Healthy. Luke made it back in time.
Claire replied:
Congratulations.
Then, after a pause:
And I’m sorry I accused you of sleeping with Daniel before asking anything.
Megan answered:
You had a reason to think he was lying. Just the wrong lie.
Claire smiled despite herself.
That sentence summarized the entire first night.
The pregnancy had been visible.
Daniel’s real betrayal had been hidden.
Claire had attacked the visible explanation because she had no access to the invisible one.
It was simply the visible fact Claire grabbed because she had no access to the real one.
