Chapter 10 - WHAT CLAIRE HAD BEEN USED FOR
Claire’s therapist asked:
“What hurts most?”
“The cheating.”
“Only?”
“No.”
“The lie?”
“Yes.”
“Only?”
Claire shook her head.
Then finally said:
“He made me useful.”
That was it.
Daniel had used:
her income,
her apartment contribution,
her signature,
her public engagement,
her wedding plans,
as stability while privately building a different romantic life.
Claire did not feel rejected because Ethan was male.
She felt converted into infrastructure.
A fiancée on paper.
A co-guarantor.
A social explanation.
A future wife Daniel stopped planning to actually be.
Her therapist said:
“You are separating identity from conduct.”
Claire looked up.
“What?”
“Daniel loving Ethan is not something done to you.”
Claire nodded.
“Daniel promising marriage to you while secretly continuing another relationship is.”
Exactly.
That distinction became how Claire spoke about the breakup.
Claire also had to untangle her own humiliation from rejection.
For weeks she thought:
Was I not enough?
Therapy challenged the question.
Daniel’s deception did not prove Claire lacked something a man could provide.
It proved Daniel had not honestly resolved his own life before promising Claire one.
The comparison itself was false.
Claire eventually stopped asking:
What did Ethan have that I didn’t?
and started asking:
Why did Daniel believe I should keep making choices without the truth?
That question led somewhere useful.
The first only injured her.
