Chapter 14 - ETHAN AND CLAIRE
Months later, Claire met Ethan.
Megan arranged nothing.
It happened accidentally at a gallery opening.
Ethan looked ready to leave.
Claire said:
“Don’t.”
He stopped.
“I owe you an apology.”
“Yes.”
“I knew you existed.”
“Yes.”
“I believed him when he said the engagement was basically over.”
Claire’s eyes narrowed.
“Basically?”
“That’s what he said.”
“He was planning a wedding.”
“I know that now.”
Ethan looked ashamed.
“I should have verified.”
Claire answered:
“You should have refused to participate until he ended it.”
“Yes.”
There was no need to soften it.
Then Claire said:
“You’re not why he lied to me.”
Ethan looked surprised.
“No?”
“You’re part of what he lied about.”
That difference mattered.
Ethan had participated in secrecy.
Daniel had built the double life.
Claire did not forgive Ethan fully.
Ethan’s apology did not absolve him.
Claire asked:
“Did you ever see my name pop up on Daniel’s phone?”
“Yes.”
“Did you ever see wedding photos?”
“Yes.”
“And you stayed.”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
Ethan looked away.
“Because I believed the version where you two were emotionally over and only untangling logistics.”
Claire laughed.
“The logistics included a wedding.”
“I know.”
“You chose the version that hurt you less too.”
Ethan nodded.
That was important.
Daniel built the lie.
Other people helped it survive because the lie offered each of them a tolerable explanation.
Ethan was not innocent.
He was also not the architect.
She did not need to.
But she stopped carrying him as the person who “took” Daniel.
