Chapter 8 - ETHAN WALKS AWAY
Ethan ended the relationship.
Not because Daniel was exposed.
Because exposure proved Daniel had still not chosen honesty himself.
Daniel called him repeatedly.
Ethan answered once.
“You told me you would tell her.”
“I was going to.”
“When?”
“Before closing.”
“That’s not an answer.”
Daniel said:
“I was trying to protect everyone.”
Ethan laughed.
“No. You were trying to avoid losing anything.”
Claire heard about the breakup through Megan.
She felt a strange emotion.
Not satisfaction.
Recognition.
Daniel had tried to keep:
Claire,
Ethan,
the financing,
the apartment,
the wedding,
the company structure.
He told each person:
Just give me time.
Time became the tool that let him avoid choosing.
Eventually everyone chose for him.
Claire did not celebrate Ethan leaving Daniel.
Part of her wanted to.
Then she read the messages Ethan sent over the previous six months.
ETHAN:
I won’t keep doing this while she’s planning a wedding.
DANIEL:
After the redemption closes.
ETHAN:
You said that before the lender term sheet.
DANIEL:
Everything changed.
ETHAN:
No. The excuse changed.
Claire stopped reading.
That line was too accurate.
Daniel’s deadlines moved:
after underwriting,
after term sheet,
after board approval,
after closing.
Each future milestone promised honesty.
