Chapter 3 - ETHAN
Ethan Cole was thirty-two.
Architectural photographer.
Freelance.
No trust fund.
No secret criminal life.
Daniel met him in college.
They were close for years.
Then lost contact.
Three years ago they reconnected.
At first:
coffee.
Then:
dinners,
long messages,
weekend work trips.
Daniel was already dating Claire.
He told himself nothing had happened.
Then something did.
A kiss.
Then another.
Then a hotel room.
Daniel did not immediately leave Claire.
He panicked.
Not because Ethan was a man.
Because admitting the relationship would destroy the future Daniel had already built.
Wedding plans.
Apartment.
Company financing.
Family expectations.
Claire’s trust.
Daniel told Ethan:
“Give me time.”
Ethan did.
Months.
Then more months.
Megan was the only person Ethan told.
She hated the situation.
She told her brother:
“If he loves you, he has to stop using her.”
Ethan answered:
“He says the financing closes in the spring.”
Megan said:
“Then he’s waiting for money.”
Ethan defended Daniel.
“No. He’s scared.”
Both could be true.
Ethan had also financed nothing.
That distinction mattered.
He received no Northline shares.
No secret payments.
No apartment interest.
Daniel occasionally paid for travel when they met out of town, but forensic review found no company funds used for those trips.
The relationship was personal.
Not a financial conspiracy between Daniel and Ethan.
Claire initially imagined Ethan was waiting for Daniel to close the transaction and then benefit from his wealth.
Megan shut that down.
“My brother told him to cancel the deal if that was what honesty cost.”
Claire looked at her.
“He said that?”
“More than once.”
Later texts confirmed it.
ETHAN:
Tell her now. Lose the financing if you have to.
DANIEL:
You don’t understand what happens if this falls apart.
ETHAN:
Then let it fall apart.
That made Daniel’s responsibility harder to distribute.
Ethan had participated in secrecy.
He had also repeatedly pushed Daniel toward disclosure.
Daniel kept choosing delay.
Megan’s pregnancy had nothing to do with Daniel.
The father was Megan’s husband, Luke, who was working overseas on a six-month engineering assignment.
Megan came to the apartment because Ethan finally told Daniel:
Tell Claire this week, or I will walk.
Megan’s husband Luke became relevant only because Daniel tried to use him as evidence that Megan would not expose the secret.
Daniel once told Ethan:
Megan has her own life. She won’t blow ours up.
Megan later read the message and became furious.
“You treated my marriage like a reason I’d keep yours fake.”
Daniel apologized.
She did not accept immediately.
Luke knew Ethan was gay and knew about Daniel eventually.
He had told Megan:
“If Daniel wants privacy, fine. If Daniel wants a fiancée as camouflage, that’s different.”
That sentence stayed with Megan.
Privacy protected a person’s right to disclose on their own terms.
Deception recruited another person into a false reality without consent.
That was the boundary Daniel crossed.
Daniel still stalled.
So Megan came herself.
