Chapter 11 - THE WOMAN HE MARRIED NEXT

Vanessa testified voluntarily.
Daniel did not look at her.
She wore no wedding ring.
Rachel asked:
“When did Daniel tell you he was filing for divorce?”
“About four months before Claire’s hospitalization.”
“Did he tell you Claire knew?”
“Yes.”
“Was that true?”
“No.”
Vanessa swallowed.
“He told me they were negotiating privately.”
“Did you believe him?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“Because he showed me draft papers.”
Claire stared.
Daniel had shown Vanessa divorce drafts months before he showed Claire.
Vanessa continued.
“He said Claire would receive a generous settlement.”
“Did he say he was taking the house?”
“He said the house was effectively marital.”
It wasn’t.
“Did you know wedding expenses came from Morgan Design?”
“No.”
“Did you know DMR Strategic named you as beneficiary?”
“No.”
Vanessa looked toward Daniel.
“I found out after the bank called.”
Daniel’s lawyer cross-examined carefully.
“Ms. Cole, you loved Daniel?”
“Yes.”
“You planned a life with him?”
“Yes.”
“You are angry now?”
“Yes.”
“Then your testimony may be influenced by betrayal.”
Vanessa nodded.
“Of course.”
A surprisingly strong answer.
Then she added:
“That doesn’t change the documents.”
Rebecca Shaw would have liked her.
Claire almost smiled.
Vanessa’s final evidence was a voice memo Daniel sent before the wedding.
Claire will sign. She hates conflict, especially when she’s sick. Once it’s done, there’s nothing left to fight about.
The courtroom went silent.
Daniel’s eyes closed.
Claire felt something inside her finally settle.
Not because the recording proved everything.
Because it proved what she had felt in the hospital.
He chose the moment because he thought weakness meant consent would be easier.
That was the cruelty.
Not the divorce.

Not even Vanessa.
Timing.
