Chapter 15 - THE MEMO BEFORE VANESSA
Three months later, Claire returned to St. Matthew’s Hospital for a follow-up.
The nurse from Room 814 recognized her.
“You look better.”
“I feel better.”
After the appointment, the nurse hesitated.
“There’s something the visitor desk found during an old records cleanup.”
She handed Claire a sealed envelope.
Her name was written on the front.
No return address.
Inside was a photocopy.
Legal memo.

Date:
Eighteen months before Claire’s hospitalization.
Four months before the merger argument she remembered.
Claire stopped walking.
The memo discussed pathways for Daniel to assume temporary control if Claire became:
Medically unavailable.
Emotionally unable to manage.
Or unwilling to approve transactions deemed necessary for preservation of marital economic interests.
Unwilling.
Claire read the word twice.
At the bottom was a handwritten note.
D.M. requests options before presenting acquisition proposal.
Claire’s skin went cold.
Daniel had asked how to override her before he even asked her about the merger.
Vanessa had not started the betrayal.
The hospital had not started it.
The divorce had not started it.
The beginning was smaller.
A husband preparing for his wife to say no.
Claire folded the memo.
Then she called Rachel.
“I found something.”
“What?”
“The first page.”
Rachel paused.
“What first page?”
Claire looked out through the hospital windows at the city below.
“The one Daniel wrote before he knew I was going to fight.”
Outside, traffic moved under bright afternoon light.
Claire touched the hospital bracelet still around her wrist from the appointment.
Then she removed it.
This time no one had to tell her what anything meant.
