Chapter 7 - THE FAIR SHARE
Daniel offered Claire a settlement.
He would waive any claim to the house.
Return the car.
Repay half the questionable transfers.
In exchange, Claire would not pursue sanctions over the forged filing.
Rachel looked at her.
“Financially, it’s not terrible.”
Claire read the offer.
“What does he still get?”
“Thirty percent of the marital appreciation in two commercial properties and a percentage of the design company’s increased value.”
“Is that fair?”
Rachel sighed.
“That is the annoying question.”
Claire waited.
“Maybe partly.”
Daniel had worked.
A lot.
He negotiated the lease that doubled income on the East Carson building.
He restructured a bad loan after Claire’s father died.
He introduced Claire to the hotel group that saved Morgan Design during 2023.
Claire could deny none of it.
Daniel’s mistake was thinking contribution meant possession.
Claire’s mistake had been thinking avoiding financial decisions meant she could avoid responsibility for them.
She rejected the settlement.
But not because she wanted everything.
She countered.
Independent valuation.
Daniel receives whatever marital appreciation he can prove.
No interest in Claire’s premarital principal.
Full repayment of wedding expenses charged to company accounts.
Full disclosure of DMR Strategic.
No confidentiality clause preventing Claire from discussing forged filings.
Daniel refused.
His answer arrived through Marcus’s replacement lawyer:
Mrs. Morgan seeks punishment disguised as accounting.
Claire stared.
Then wrote one sentence back:
Mr. Morgan seeks ownership disguised as contribution.
Rachel sent it.
The case moved toward hearing.
Meanwhile, Vanessa moved out of Daniel’s hotel apartment.
Not because Claire asked.
Because Vanessa discovered Daniel had lied about the corporate card.
He told her the wedding was paid personally.
It wasn’t.
She confronted him.
Daniel said he intended to reimburse everything.
Vanessa asked when.
He had no answer.
Then she asked whether Claire had really signed the settlement.
Daniel said yes.
Vanessa had already seen the forensic report.
That ended the conversation.
Claire heard all of this through Vanessa’s attorney.
She felt no triumph.
Only exhaustion.
Then Rachel received subpoenaed emails from Daniel’s former assistant.
One subject line:
C.M. transition timing.
Sent ten months earlier.
Daniel to Marcus:
If I wait until she’s fully healthy, she’ll fight every transfer. We need the structure settled before she starts paying attention again.
Claire read it twice.
