Chapter 3 - WHAT SHE DIDN'T DO

Claire answered on the fourth ring.

“Hello?”

Daniel’s breathing came fast.

“Claire.”

She said nothing.

Behind him, Vanessa was asking someone why the lights were off.

Then:

BANG! BANG! BANG!

“Claire, what did you do?!”

The hotel door handle began turning.

Vanessa screamed.

“They’re opening it!”

Claire closed her eyes.

For one second she allowed herself to enjoy the fear in his voice.

Then she hated that she enjoyed it.

“I didn’t do anything to your hotel.”

“Bullshit.”

The door opened.

A man’s voice:

“Mr. Morgan, hotel security. We need to discuss the payment authorization.”

Another voice:

“And I have documents for you.”

Daniel went silent.

Claire recognized the second voice.

Process server.

Rachel had warned her Daniel would receive emergency preservation papers once the bank found suspicious transfers.

Daniel whispered:

“You planned this.”

“No.”

Claire’s voice remained calm.

“You did.”

“What does that mean?”

“You served me.”

Silence.

“The acknowledgment I signed made your filing effective.”

“That’s not—”

“Our prenup revokes your authority over my separate assets the moment divorce service is acknowledged.”

Daniel stopped breathing.

Claire continued.

“You wanted the divorce active before your wedding.”

He understood.

The speed had been his choice.

Not hers.

Then Claire said:

“You should have read your own paperwork.”

She disconnected.

The next morning, Daniel’s lawyer Marcus Reed issued a letter accusing Claire of weaponizing corporate account controls to humiliate Daniel during his wedding.

Rachel laughed when she read it.

“He wants this to be revenge.”

“Wasn’t it?”

“No.”

Claire looked at her.

Rachel continued.

“The bank freeze was automatic after the authority revocation. The preservation order happened because the auditor found transfers.”

“What transfers?”

Rachel turned the laptop.

$420,000 over eleven months.

From Morgan Design Holdings.

To DMR Strategic Partners.

Claire stared.

“DMR.”

“Daniel Morgan Reed.”

Daniel.

Marcus Reed.

The shell company belonged to both men.

Claire’s stomach went cold.

“What did it pay for?”

Rachel opened a second page.

Vanessa’s apartment deposit.

Wedding planner retainers.

A private investment fund.

And one payment Claire could not explain.

$150,000 to a medical-record consulting company.

Claire looked up.

“Why would Daniel pay for medical records?”

Rachel’s face hardened.

“That is what we need to find out.”

The divorce had been ugly for less than twenty-four hours.

Already the affair looked like the least important betrayal.
