Chapter 6 - THE PAPERS THAT GREW A SIGNATURE
The court filing contained seventeen signed pages.
Claire had signed one.
Rachel noticed first.
“Don’t touch anything.”
Claire stared at the PDF.
Property settlement.
Vehicle transfer.
Mutual release.
Every page carried Claire Morgan’s signature.
Same shape.
Same slant.
Same imperfect loop in the C.
Too same.
A forensic document examiner compared them.
The signatures were digital reproductions of the acknowledgment page Claire signed in the hospital.
Copied.
Placed.
Repeated.
Claire felt sick.
“Daniel forged them.”
Rachel said, “Someone did.”
That distinction mattered.
Marcus responded immediately.
His firm received a fully executed packet from Daniel.
Daniel claimed Marcus handled document completion.
The men began separating.
Fast.
Daniel’s statement:
“I believed Claire signed the full agreement.”
Marcus:
“My office relied on documents supplied by the client.”
Claire read both.
“Someone is lying.”
“Probably both.”
The hospital became crucial.
The nurse who entered after Daniel left had written:
Patient reports spouse pressured her to sign legal documents while medicated. Patient states she signed only acknowledgment page. Full packet not reviewed.
Visitor log showed Daniel entered at 6:14 p.m.
Exited 6:32.
Claire’s medication chart showed IV pain medication at 6:02.
Even if she had signed everything, enforceability would have been a fight.
But she had not.
Daniel’s lawyer tried a new argument.
Claire had intended settlement and later withdrew consent.
The nurse contradicted that.
Then the care-team tablet produced another detail.
At 6:27, Claire had used the bedside device to message Rachel:
Signed service only. He took packet.
Timestamped.
Before Daniel left the hospital floor.
Claire looked at the message.
A small sentence.
A lifeline from herself to herself.
Rachel smiled.
“You were smarter on morphine than Daniel was sober.”
Claire almost laughed.
Then the forensic examiner found metadata on the forged packet.
Created at 8:41 p.m.
The night Daniel left the hospital.
Computer user:
MREED-LAW.
Marcus Reed’s office.

And Daniel suddenly wanted to negotiate.
