Chapter 4 - THE SECRET VISITS

The police treated the plaza incident as a child-safety event.

No kidnapping.

Evelyn had stopped to help.

Security footage confirmed Emma ran from Daniel’s supervision.

That mattered later.

At home, Rachel demanded everything.

Daniel tried to delay.

Rachel called her attorney.

Then asked in front of him:

“Can I take Emma to my sister’s tonight?”

The attorney said yes, assuming no existing order prevented it and Daniel knew where the child was.

Rachel packed.

Daniel panicked.

“You’re taking her?”

“For tonight.”

“That’s exactly what I said you’d do.”

Rachel froze.

There it was.

He had built his own prophecy.

Then Evelyn came to the apartment.

Rachel almost refused entry.

Emma saw her.

“Nana!”

Again.

Rachel’s stomach turned.

Evelyn carried a stuffed rabbit.

Small.

White.

Pink ears.

Emma grabbed it.

“Bunny!”

Rachel looked at Daniel.

“You gave her this?”

Evelyn answered:

“I did.”

During secret visits.

Daniel had taken Emma to Evelyn’s home on weekday afternoons when Rachel believed Emma was with Daniel at the park, library, or children’s museum.

Why?

Daniel said:

“I wanted Mom to have a relationship with her.”

Rachel said:

“Then you could have told me.”

Daniel snapped:

“You hate her.”

“No. I don’t trust her.”

“Same thing.”

Evelyn interrupted.

“No.”

Both turned.

Evelyn looked at Daniel.

“She’s right.”

Daniel stared.

Evelyn continued:

“You asked me to keep the visits secret.”

Rachel looked at Evelyn.

“Why did you agree?”

A long pause.

“Because I wanted my granddaughter.”

Not a noble answer.

True.

Then:

“And because Daniel told me your marriage was already over.”

Rachel looked at Daniel.

He had been creating a second version of their family.

One where Rachel was already gone.
