Chapter 9 - EVELYN TESTIFIES
Daniel expected his mother to support him.
She did not.
Evelyn testified:
“Daniel told me Rachel agreed Emma should spend time with me.”
False.
“He told me the marriage was functionally over.”
Partly true.
“He told me Rachel intended to relocate.”
False.
Then:
“I agreed to secret visits because I wanted access to my granddaughter.”
The judge asked:
“Did you question whether secrecy was appropriate?”
Evelyn looked down.
“Not enough.”
Then:
“Did you offer Daniel money tied to establishing a separate household?”
“Yes.”
“Why?”
“I thought I was helping him leave a bad marriage responsibly.”
“Based on whose description?”
“My son’s.”
There.
Evelyn had mistaken loyalty for verification.
Then Daniel’s lawyer asked:
“Are you angry with your son?”
“Yes.”
“So your testimony is influenced by anger.”
“Of course.”
Good answer.
Then:
“Are the facts you gave untrue?”
The lawyer paused.
Evelyn looked at Daniel.
“I am angry because they are true.”
