The amusement-park investigation triggered scrutiny of Robert Lane’s company too.
Vanessa hated that.
The very event designed to suppress Emily’s story amplified it.
Regulators reviewed maintenance-compliance records.
What they found was serious but not apocalyptic.
Several buildings had inaccurate completion dates.
Two vendors billed before work finished.
Some inspections were signed late and backdated administratively.
No evidence Robert ordered dangerous repairs ignored.
But management controls were weak.
Robert admitted he knew some paperwork had been “cleaned up” after deadlines.
He called it:
administrative catch-up.
Regulators disagreed.
The company paid penalties, replaced contractors, and entered enhanced compliance monitoring.
Robert resigned from active management.
No prison fantasy.
Then Daniel confronted him.
“You asked Vanessa to hide this?”
Robert looked ashamed.
“I asked her to give me a week.”
“She gave you months.”
“I didn’t know.”
That mattered.
Vanessa had expanded the secret on her own.
Then Robert asked:
“Why would she do that to Emily?”
Daniel answered:
May you like
“Because once she decided the family secret mattered more than the truth, every person who might expose it became a problem.”
Even her own daughter.
