Chapter 2 - GRANDMA WASN'T IN FLORIDA
Helen Carter was Emily’s paternal grandmother.
Sixty-seven.
Retired school principal.
She lived twenty minutes away.
Vanessa had told Emily three days earlier:
“Grandma went to Florida for the winter.”
Emily believed her.
Why wouldn’t she?
Then Helen received a strange voicemail from Emily the night before the amusement-park trip.
It lasted nine seconds.
No complete sentence.
Just:
“Grandma, Mom says I imagined it.”
Then:
“I didn’t.”
The call ended.
Helen tried Vanessa.
No answer.
Tried Emily’s father, Daniel Carter.
Daniel was away on a four-day construction-management job in Virginia.
He called Vanessa.
Vanessa told him:
“Emily is anxious again. Don’t feed it.”
Again.
That word mattered.
Helen drove to the Carter house the next morning.
Empty.
A neighbor said Vanessa had taken Emily to Adventure Harbor.
Helen followed.
She arrived minutes before the emergency stop.
Now Emily held her around the waist.
“I told her the seat moved.”
Helen looked at Vanessa.
“What did she tell you?”
Emily buried her face against Helen’s coat.
“She knew.”
Vanessa snapped:
“She did not know anything.”
Ryan stepped between them.
“Ma’am, please stop.”
Vanessa turned on him.
“She was already panicking before the train moved.”
Ryan answered:
“I physically felt the seat shift.”
That ended one argument.
Then park security arrived.
The ride remained closed.
Nobody touched the seat.
Good.
The attraction supervisor called maintenance and documented the row number.
Then a medic checked Emily.
No injury.
Rapid breathing.
Trembling.
Tears.
Normal responses to acute fear.
Then Helen asked:
“What did you mean last night?”
Emily looked at Vanessa.
Her mother shook her head slowly.
Almost invisibly.
Helen saw it.
So did Ryan.
Emily whispered:
“Mom said nobody would believe me if I kept acting scared.”
Helen’s face hardened.
“Believe you about what?”
Emily started crying again.
Vanessa said:
“Stop questioning her.”
Helen looked at her.
“I asked one question.”
Then Emily whispered:
May you like
“The man in our garage.”
Vanessa went completely still.
