Chapter 7 - ROBERT LANE

Robert Lane’s company managed thirty-two apartment buildings across two states.

The issue involved maintenance-compliance records.

Several subcontractors had submitted work as completed when it had been:

delayed,

partially done,

or performed after the recorded date.

Again:

not one giant fake empire.

A messy system.

Then an insurance inspection raised concerns.

Vanessa looked into it privately because Robert was recovering from heart surgery.

She found Travis Bell’s name across several disputed work orders.

She confronted him.

Travis admitted some reports had been backfilled.

He said:

“Everybody knew.”

Vanessa did not believe that.

Then she began collecting copies.

Why secretly?

Because Robert begged her.

“If Daniel hears, he’ll make me report it before I know what happened.”

Daniel worked in construction management.

He had mandatory reporting obligations in some professional contexts.

Robert feared regulators.

Vanessa chose family protection over disclosure.

Then Emily saw Travis in the garage.

The envelope contained copies of property records.

Not money.

Good.

Emily’s inference was wrong.

Vanessa’s reaction was worse.

Instead of saying:

“That was paperwork for Grandpa’s company,”

she told Emily:

“You imagined something suspicious.”

Why?

Because any explanation might reach Daniel.

Then Emily repeated the story to Helen.

Vanessa panicked.

She decided not only to keep the secret.

She decided to undermine the witness.

A nine-year-old.

That was where family loyalty became abuse.
