Chapter 10 - EMILY'S ACCOUNTABILITY
Emily wanted to explain.
Therapy forced her to stop using explanation as defense.
She said:
“I was afraid.”
The therapist answered:
“Yes.”
“I thought he would feel replaced.”
“Yes.”
“I thought if I waited until he bonded—”
The therapist stopped her.
“There.”
Emily froze.
“If you waited until he bonded, what?”
“He might stay.”
“That is influence.”
Emily cried.
She had never thought of it as manipulation.
But delay had changed Michael’s choices.
Every month increased emotional stakes.
Every milestone made disclosure harder.
Emily had told herself:
I’m protecting the family.
But part of her strategy was:
make the family real enough that truth cannot destroy it.
That was not fair.
Then she confronted Margaret through counsel.
“You used my lie against Noah.”
Margaret answered:
“You created the lie.”
Both true.
Then Emily said:
“I’m responsible for deceiving Michael.”
Pause.
“You’re responsible for what you did with the baby.”
No moral merging.

No shared blame for physical danger.
Each action belonged to its actor.
