Chapter 6 - THE FIRST THREAT
Margaret’s first threat was not about Noah’s safety.
It was about disclosure.
She texted Emily:
Tell him before the trust documents are signed.
Emily answered:
I will.
Then:
This week.
Margaret responded:
You said that last month.
Emily knew she was right.
Michael had begun signing estate-plan revisions.
Emily panicked.
Not because she wanted Noah to inherit money fraudulently.
Because she feared disclosure would destroy the marriage Michael and Noah already had.
She asked an attorney privately:
“If Michael learns he is not the biological father, what happens?”
The attorney answered:
“That depends on legal parentage, marital presumptions, acknowledgments, timing, and state law. Do not make assumptions. We need records.”
Emily realized how reckless her silence had become.
This was no longer only emotional.
It had legal consequences.
She stopped the estate-plan signing.
Told Michael:
“I need more time reviewing.”
Michael thought she was being cautious.
Margaret knew why.
Then one afternoon Margaret arrived at the mansion without notice.
Emily was upstairs with Noah.
Margaret said:
“You’re going to tell him today.”
“Leave.”
“No.”
“You don’t get to command me in my house.”
Margaret laughed.
“Your house?”
Emily stiffened.
Then Margaret took Noah from his play mat.
Emily stepped forward.
“Give him to me.”
Margaret held him normally at first.
Then said:
“If you won’t tell Michael, maybe I will make you understand how serious this is.”
“What does that mean?”
Margaret’s expression changed.
Control had become anger.
Then footsteps sounded downstairs.
Michael was home early.
Margaret lifted Noah by his lower legs.
