Chapter 2 - BEFORE MICHAEL CAME BACK

Emily and Michael had not been happily married when Noah was conceived.
They had not been married at all.
Their first marriage ended after six years.
Not because of cheating.
Because grief hollowed them out.
At thirty-two, Michael had been diagnosed with testicular cancer.
Treatment worked.
His prognosis became excellent.
But fertility testing afterward showed severe azoospermia.
Very little chance of biological conception without advanced intervention.
Michael reacted badly.
Not violently.
Silently.
He stopped talking about children.
Stopped attending fertility appointments.
Then one night said:
“Maybe this is the universe telling us.”
Emily hated the sentence.
They had wanted children for years.
She did not want the universe blamed for fear.
Their marriage fractured.
Twelve months later they separated.
Six months after that, divorced.
Emily turned thirty.
Then thirty-one.
She decided she still wanted to become a mother.
Alone if necessary.
She began counseling at a reproductive clinic.
Then donor selection.
Then treatment.
No stolen embryo.
No clinic fraud.
No switched samples.
She chose anonymous donor sperm through a regulated sperm bank.
The decision was hers.
Documented.
Legal.
Then Michael came back.
Not physically by surprise.
Emotionally.
He called after nearly a year of minimal contact.
“I’ve been in therapy.”
Emily said nothing.
“I was angry at my body and punished you for it.”
That was more honest than anything he had said during the divorce.
They began talking.
Coffee.
Then dinner.
Then months of rebuilding.
Emily did not tell him she had already completed donor insemination.
Why?
Because she did not know yet whether it had worked.
Then the pregnancy test was positive.
Two lines.
She sat on the bathroom floor for twenty minutes.
That same evening Michael called.
“I want to try again.”
And Emily made the worst decision of her life.
May you like
She said:
“Me too.”
