Chapter 9 - LEGAL FATHERHOOD
Michael’s first question to counsel was blunt.
“Am I his father?”
Attorney Daniel Cho answered:
“You are his father in several senses. We need to separate them.”
Biological?
No evidence.
Legal?
Likely yes, but records and state law mattered.
Social?
Obviously.
Emotional?
That was Michael’s choice.
Daniel reviewed:
marriage dates,
birth certificate,
acknowledgment documents,
clinic records,
donor-conception statutes,
and parentage presumptions.
No instant courtroom declaration.
No home DNA kit.
Then Daniel said:
“Do you want genetic testing?”
Michael stared.
“For what?”
“To confirm biological non-paternity if that fact matters to you.”
Michael thought of Noah sleeping against his chest.
His first fever.
The first time he rolled over.
Then:
“I already know enough.”
He did not test immediately.
Not because biology did not matter.
Because no one disputed donor conception.
The clinic records established it.
Then Daniel said:
“If you remain Noah’s legal father, estate planning can reflect that regardless of genetics.”
Michael looked up.
“Regardless?”
“Yes.”
That word freed something.
Margaret had built her entire threat around the assumption:
no blood = no family.
The law did not automatically share her philosophy.
Neither did Michael.
