Chapter 11 - THE CHILD-ENDANGERMENT CASE

Margaret faced criminal consequences for the infant-handling incident.

The baby had not been dropped.

No injury.

No direct impact.

But suspending an eight-month-old upside down by the lower legs during a confrontation created obvious risk.

Her attorney emphasized:

brief duration,

continuous grip,

Michael’s immediate intervention,

no injury,

no prior criminal history.

The prosecution emphasized:

infant vulnerability,

anger,

use of the child as leverage,

and the surrounding threat dynamic.

A negotiated resolution followed.

Probation.

Mandatory intervention.

No unsupervised contact with Noah.

Compliance with family-court orders.

No fantasy decade sentence.

Then Margaret addressed Michael outside court.

“I was trying to protect you.”

He laughed without humor.

“You all keep saying that.”

She stared.

“All?”

Michael looked toward Emily across the corridor.

“Yes.”

Then back at his mother.

“Everyone who lied to me said protection.”

That became the central wound.

Not paternity alone.

People deciding Michael could not handle truth.
