Chapter 10 - THE GOLD BOX

Esther gave Alexander a box through her attorney.

Inside were:

baby clothes,

a small silver rattle,

and a handwritten letter.

The clothes had belonged to Isabel.

Stored for decades.

Alexander had never known.

The letter said:

I thought Sofia could wear something that survived Isabel.

He cried.

Then found another page.

A list.

First month:

Valeria and baby stay with Esther.

Second month:

weekends at Esther’s.

Three months:

Esther provides childcare when Valeria returns to work.

Six months:

overnights begin.

One year:

family baptism anniversary.

Alexander stared.

This was not one impulsive nursery.

It was a timeline.

A role assigned before the baby existed.

He called his therapist.

“I think Mom thought Sofia would fix something.”

The therapist answered:

“Maybe.”

“What?”

“That is for your mother to understand.”

Alexander looked at the list again.

He had spent months trying to explain Esther.

Now he had to stop translating her and start responding to what she actually did.
