Chapter 11 - THE CASE
The criminal case remained narrow.
Esther struck Valeria’s guarded upper body with a wooden stick.
Alexander witnessed part of it.
Valeria had bruising.
No fracture.
No abdominal strike.
No fetal injury documented.
Esther accepted a misdemeanor assault-related plea.
Terms included:
probation,
anger-management treatment,
no unsupervised contact with Valeria,
and no contact with the baby unless Valeria and Alexander later agreed after legal restrictions expired.
No attempted murder.
No child-endangerment charge built around an unborn child just for drama.
The law focused on provable conduct.
Alexander’s slap of Esther was reviewed too.
He had intervened to stop the ongoing attack.
The physical response was evaluated in that context.
He still admitted:
“I wanted to hurt her.”
His lawyer said:
“Do not confuse lawful intervention with every emotion you had.”
Alexander understood.
Protecting Valeria did not give him unlimited moral immunity either.
Esther’s criminal lawyer tried to frame the stick as discipline-era thinking.
“She grew up in a household where physical correction was common.”
The prosecutor answered:
“Valeria is thirty-two.”
That ended that line.
Childhood norms might explain Esther’s relationship to force.
They did not transform an adult daughter-in-law into someone Esther was entitled to physically correct.
Context could mitigate.
It could not redefine the victim.
The plea agreement also prohibited Esther from contacting Valeria indirectly through relatives.
That clause mattered.
For the first two weeks, cousins sent messages:
Your mother-in-law is devastated.
She didn’t mean to hurt the baby.
She just wants to explain.
Alexander replied once to the family group:
“Do not carry messages between them.”
Then muted the chat.
Aunt Teresa called him.
“You’re tearing the family apart.”
Alexander answered:
May you like
“No. I’m refusing to use you as a hallway.”
It was the first time he had set a boundary without softening it afterward.
