Chapter 6 - THE MOVE

The real trigger was Denver.

Alexander received an offer to become regional operations director for a food-distribution company.

More pay.

Better hours.

Less travel.

A hospital fifteen minutes from the proposed apartment.

Valeria’s obstetrician supported transferring care if they moved before the third trimester became too advanced.

They discussed it privately.

Then decided:

Yes.

Move before thirty weeks.

Tell Esther after the lease was signed.

The Denver job offer had another appeal Alexander did not admit at first.

Distance.

Ninety minutes by car.

Far enough that Esther could not appear after every disagreement.

Close enough for planned visits.

Alexander felt guilty that relief was part of the decision.

Valeria said:

“You are allowed to want space.”

He answered:

“It feels like punishment.”

“It isn’t.”

“What if Mom thinks it is?”

Valeria looked at him.

“That can’t be the test anymore.”

That sentence became the actual move.

Not salary.

Not commute.

The decision that Esther’s interpretation would no longer control theirs.

Alexander hated that part.

“She’ll say we hid it.”

“We are hiding it.”

“Exactly.”

Valeria looked at him.

“Because every decision becomes a negotiation with her.”

Alexander had no answer.

They signed a twelve-month lease.

Two-bedroom apartment.

Not luxury.

Practical.

Three days later Esther discovered the moving estimate in Alexander’s email while helping him print tax forms from his laptop.

She confronted Valeria alone.

“You’re taking him.”

“No.”

“You’re taking my granddaughter.”

“She’s my daughter.”

“Don’t do that.”

“Do what?”

“Act like I’m nothing.”

Valeria stepped back.

“I never said that.”

“You didn’t have to.”

Then Esther went upstairs.

May you like

Returned with the wooden stick she used to secure an old window.

And the argument became something else.
