Chapter 4 - ISABEL

Isabel Aranda died at seventeen.

Car accident.

Alexander was twenty-two.

Esther never recovered in any ordinary sense.

She functioned.

Worked.

Hosted holidays.

Went to church.

But the family reorganized around the loss.

Birthdays became memorials.

Every Thanksgiving included Isabel’s favorite dessert.

Every Christmas, Esther placed one unopened gift beneath the tree.

Alexander never challenged it.

He loved his sister too.

The first time Valeria became pregnant, Esther cried before Valeria did.

Then that pregnancy ended at nine weeks.

Miscarriage.

Esther called it:

“losing Isabel twice.”

Valeria never forgot that sentence.

The pregnancy had been hers.

The grief had been hers.

But Esther folded it into Isabel’s story.

When Valeria conceived again, she told Alexander:

“Do not let your mother make this baby into your sister.”

Alexander promised.

Then avoided conflict every time Esther crossed a line.

He thought silence prevented escalation.

Instead it told Esther the boundary was negotiable.
