Chapter 9 - THE BABY WAS NOT INJURED

Valeria returned for another check two days later.

She had felt less movement that morning.

Panic.

The baby was fine.

Normal movement during monitoring.

No sign that Esther’s strike had directly harmed the fetus.

Valeria cried from relief.

Then said something she hated:

“So she didn’t hurt the baby.”

The doctor corrected her gently.

“We know the baby appears well today.”

Valeria nodded.

The doctor continued:

“That doesn’t make what happened acceptable.”

Important.

Valeria had started judging the seriousness of Esther’s violence by the worst possible medical outcome.

No placental abruption.

No preterm labor.

No direct belly strike.

Therefore:

maybe it was not that bad.

That logic was dangerous.

She had been attacked while pregnant.

The absence of catastrophe did not retroactively create safety.

Valeria’s fear after the assault was not limited to Esther.

She began checking fetal movement constantly.

Every hour.

Sometimes every twenty minutes.

If Sofia was quiet, panic rose.

Alexander would say:

“She moved ten minutes ago.”

Valeria snapped:

“Don’t tell me what I felt.”

He stopped.

The obstetric nurse taught them a better routine for movement awareness and when to call.

Structure helped.

Fear had turned Valeria’s body into a monitoring system.

Medical guidance gave her something more reliable than panic.

Alexander also stopped touching Valeria’s stomach without asking.

He had always done it casually.

Husband.

Father.

Expected intimacy.

After the attack, Valeria flinched once when his hand approached.

He pulled back.

“Can I?”

She nodded.

That question almost made her cry.

Consent inside marriage is often most visible after someone else has violated it.

Alexander hated learning that lesson because of his mother.

He learned it anyway.
