Chapter 2 - THE HOSPITAL

The obstetric emergency department kept Valeria for observation.

Not because the baby had been struck.

The baby had not.

But Valeria was twenty-four weeks pregnant, frightened, bruised across her upper arm and shoulder, and complaining of tightening in her abdomen after the struggle.

Monitoring showed a reassuring fetal heart rate.

No bleeding.

No obvious placental problem.

The contractions settled.

The doctor said:

“We cannot promise nothing will change later, so come back immediately for bleeding, fluid loss, worsening pain, or regular contractions.”

Valeria nodded.

Alexander sat beside her.

He looked destroyed.

“I should have seen this coming.”

Valeria stared at the monitor.

“You saw pieces.”

He flinched.

That was true.

Esther had been angry for months.

Not violent.

But increasingly possessive about the pregnancy.

She criticized the nursery.

Questioned Valeria’s doctor.

Complained about the baby’s proposed name.

Called three times a day.

Alexander always said:

“She’s excited.”

Or:

“She lost a daughter. This means a lot to her.”

Or:

“She’ll calm down.”

Valeria had accepted those explanations because they were easier than fighting.

Now she looked at him.

“She didn’t just snap.”

Alexander swallowed.

“What are you saying?”

Valeria reached into her purse and pulled out a folded envelope.

Inside were photocopies.

Hospital forms.

Postpartum care intake forms.

A newborn visitor authorization sheet.

All with Esther’s handwriting.

Alexander went still.

Valeria said:

“She’s been planning my life after delivery without asking me.”

And on the final page, under EXPECTED POSTPARTUM RESIDENCE, Esther had written one address.

Her own.
