Chapter 11 - AFTER ETHAN

The draft continued.

Ryan imagined a future.

Not romantic fantasy in explicit detail.

Practical.

Claire would leave Ethan.

Ryan would help her move.

Handle the house sale.

Manage travel.

Coordinate work.

“Take pressure off.”

He wrote:

You won’t have to think about everything because I already do.

That sentence terrified Claire more than:

You’re mine.

It revealed what “mine” meant to Ryan.

Not possession through romance.

Possession through administration.

A life where Claire’s autonomy disappeared under efficiency.

Then one paragraph:

Ethan makes you decide too much.

Claire laughed bitterly.

Ethan had flaws.

But deciding too much?

Ryan resented decision itself.

Especially Claire’s.

Then Ryan’s sister Megan asked to meet Claire.

Claire nearly refused.

Then agreed in a public place with counsel aware.

Megan apologized.

“I told him he was a good person for helping you.”

Claire said:

“You didn’t know.”

“I knew he gets controlling.”

“That’s different.”

“I minimized it.”

Megan described childhood.

Their father was unpredictable.

Bills unpaid.

Plans changed.

Their mother chaotic.

Ryan became organizer.

Schedules.

Lists.

Locks.

Backups.

He learned that preventing disorder felt like love.

Again, motive.

Not excuse.

Megan said:

“He thinks if he can make a system perfect enough, nobody leaves.”

Claire looked at her.

“He still chose to put his hands on my throat.”

“Yes.”

Megan nodded.

“I know.”

That acknowledgment mattered.

Then Claire asked:

“Did he ever talk about Ethan?”

“All the time.”

“What did he say?”

Megan hesitated.

“That Ethan didn’t deserve how easy you made his life.”

Claire went still.

Ryan had envied not only Claire.

He envied Ethan receiving Claire’s love.
