Chapter 4 - THE CONCERNED FRIEND

Ethan confronted himself before he confronted Ryan.
He had trusted him too easily.
Whenever Ryan said Claire seemed:
stressed,
scattered,
forgetful,
overworked,
Ethan listened.
Not because he thought Claire incapable.
Because Ryan sounded observant.
Concerned.
Helpful.
Then Detective Chen obtained recovered messages from Ryan’s phone.
Ryan to Ethan:
Claire left the stove on again.
Claire had not.
Ryan to Ethan:
She forgot the dog’s medication.
False.
Ryan to Ethan:
She was crying in the car today.
Claire had been frustrated by traffic.
Not crying.
Small distortions.
Enough to create an impression.
Then Ethan remembered conversations.
“I think Claire needs less on her plate.”
“She’s not sleeping.”
“She shouldn’t drive when she’s that tired.”
Ethan had sometimes changed plans because of Ryan’s concerns.
Canceled dinners.
Driven Claire himself.
Suggested she rest.
Claire stared at him.
“You listened to him about me more than you listened to me.”
Ethan did not defend himself.
“Yes.”
That honesty hurt.
Then Ryan had gone further.
He emailed Claire’s manager once.
Not from his own address.
From a generic account.
Concerned family friend here. Claire has been under significant personal stress and may need support.
Claire’s manager never told her.
Why?
He assumed it was awkward but well-intentioned.
That email preceded Claire being removed from a high-pressure client trip.
She thought management had chosen someone else for business reasons.
Now she realized Ryan may have shaped the decision.
Then another email surfaced.
To Claire’s therapist’s office.
Subject:
URGENT CONCERN.
It described Claire as:
increasingly dependent,
poorly regulated,
unsafe when alone.
Signed:
Ethan Bennett.

Ethan stared.
“I never sent this.”
