Chapter 6 - THE NIGHT HE CROSSED THE LINE

Ryan’s attorney argued the assault was an isolated emotional breakdown.
He had become obsessed.
He confronted Claire.
Lost control.
The defense wanted the history separated from the bedroom attack.
Prosecutors did the opposite.
They built timeline.
Ryan entered the house using his duplicate key.
Claire was alone.
Ethan was expected home ninety minutes later.
Ryan knew the schedule because Ethan had texted him.
Why did Ryan go?
He sent Claire:
Can we talk?
She replied:
Not tonight.
He went anyway.
Inside, he confronted her about distance.
Claire had recently stopped accepting his help.
Why?
Three weeks earlier she discovered Ryan had called her mechanic to change an appointment without asking.
She told him:
“Stop managing things for me.”
Ryan laughed.
“You’re welcome.”
Claire answered:
“No. I mean it.”
She also told Ethan:
“I want Ryan to have less access to our life.”
Ethan agreed.
He planned to ask for the spare key back.
Ryan learned this.
How?
Ethan texted him:
We need the key back. Claire wants tighter boundaries.
Ryan replied:
Of course.
Then apparently panicked.
The assault happened two days later.
That did not mean he planned physical violence.
But it meant he knew access was ending.
Then police found one note in his phone.
After key request:
If I’m out, he wins.
Who was “he”?
Ethan.
Ryan had turned friendship into competition.
Claire was not a person making a boundary.
She was territory leaving his control.
Then another note:
She thinks she wants distance because he told her to.
False.
May you like
Claire initiated it.
Ryan had rewritten her decision as Ethan’s influence.
