Chapter 2 - THE SPARE KEY

Ryan had been Ethan’s closest friend since college.
Not Claire’s.
At first.
When Ethan and Claire moved into the house two years earlier, Ryan helped.
Boxes.
Furniture.
Internet setup.
Emergency contacts.
He joked that he knew the house better than they did.
Claire liked him.
Trusted him.
That trust now felt dangerous.
Ethan remembered giving Ryan a spare key during moving week.
He was supposed to return it after the locks were rekeyed.
But Ethan never changed the locks.
Busy.
Expensive.
Forgotten.
Ryan apparently copied the key.
How many copies?
Unknown.
Police searched his apartment.
They found three keys labeled with addresses.
Claire’s was one.
The other two belonged to people Ryan knew.
One was his sister.
One was an ex-girlfriend.
No immediate crime by possession alone.
Then investigators found a small plastic container in his desk.
Inside:
Claire’s old house key.
The original.
Meaning the duplicate was deliberate.
Ethan stared at the evidence photo.
“He kept both.”
Claire said nothing.
Then Detective Chen asked:
“Did Ryan ever come over without telling you?”
Claire thought.
Sometimes packages appeared inside.
Ethan said Ryan must have dropped them off.
Sometimes the dog’s water bowl was full when Claire forgot.
Ryan said he was nearby.
Once Claire came home to find a window closed she remembered leaving open.
She assumed Ethan did it.
He had not.
Then building-entry records from Claire’s old apartment surfaced.
Before the house.
Ryan had visited there too.
More often than either remembered.
Not illegal.
They invited him sometimes.
But five entries occurred while both Claire and Ethan were away.
Why?
Ryan told security at the time:
“Emergency plant care.”
Claire had no plants requiring care.
The pattern began before the spare key.
Then Claire remembered one detail from the assault.
Ryan said:
“You never listen when I make things easier for you.”
She had thought it was obsession talking.
May you like
Now she wondered:
What exactly had he been “making easier”?
