Chapter 13 - THE MARRIAGE AFTER RYAN

Claire and Ethan did not automatically become stronger because they survived something.
For a while they became harder.
Claire was angry.
Ethan was guilty.
He apologized constantly.
She got tired of hearing it.
One night she said:
“I don’t need you to confess every day.”
“What do you need?”
“For you to stop treating guilt like work.”
He went quiet.
Then she explained.
Real repair meant:
ask before helping,
do not outsource judgments about her,
do not make “protective” decisions without her,
believe discomfort before demanding proof.
Ethan practiced.
Poorly at first.
He asked too many permission questions.
“Can I make dinner?”
Claire laughed.
“Yes, you can make dinner.”
They learned nuance.
Consent is not bureaucracy.
Respect is not paralysis.
Then Claire’s new promotion application advanced.
Final interview.
She almost told Ethan she was nervous.
Stopped.
Why?
Because she feared he would reassure her too strongly.
Ryan had poisoned even support.
She told Ethan that.
He said:
“What would help?”
Claire thought.
“Ask me how I think it went afterward.”
“Okay.”
No pep talk.
No prediction.
No fixing.
After the interview:
“How do you think it went?”
“Good.”
“Then I hope you get it.”
Simple.
She did.
The promotion required travel.
Claire accepted.
First trip:
three nights in Chicago.
Ethan did not say:
Are you sure?
Ryan would have.
Instead:
“What time is your flight?”
That distinction made Claire cry in the airport bathroom.
Then Detective Chen called.
There was one item from evidence storage Claire had to decide whether to reclaim.
Ryan’s duplicate key.
Did she want it returned as property?
Or destroyed?
Claire laughed.
“Destroy it.”
May you like
Then changed her mind.
“Wait.”
