Chapter 8 - THE OTHER ADDRESSES

Police examined the other keys from Ryan’s desk.

One belonged to his sister.

Authorized.

One belonged to ex-girlfriend Melissa Hale.

Not authorized.

Melissa had ended their relationship four years earlier.

She thought she got her key back.

Ryan had copied it too.

She reported no known break-ins.

Then she remembered:

A broken sink repaired while she was away.

She assumed landlord.

A missing bottle of wine later replaced.

A window lock adjusted.

Small things.

Ryan told investigators he had entered twice after the breakup.

“To help.”

Melissa stared at him in disbelief through the interview report.

She had never asked.

No assault.

No major theft.

But same pattern.

Uninvited access framed as care.

Then Melissa described their relationship.

Ryan hated uncertainty.

If she did not reply, he drove over.

If she had a problem, he solved it before asking.

If she rejected help, he called her stubborn.

After breakup, he said:

“You’ll realize how much I did for you.”

Claire read that line.

Nearly identical.

The obsession with Claire was not born from nowhere.

It was an escalation of a relational pattern.

Then detectives contacted Ryan’s sister, Megan.

She defended him at first.

“He’s always been the helper.”

Then Laura asked:

“Does he ask first?”

Megan paused.

Not always.

She remembered Ryan replacing her bedroom lock while she was traveling because he thought it was unsafe.

She hated the new lock.

He called her ungrateful.

Again.

Help converted into authority.

Then Megan said something that surprised Claire.

“Ryan used to say Claire was the first person who appreciated him properly.”

Claire froze.

She had.

She thanked him constantly.

Not flirtation.

May you like

Gratitude.

Ryan had turned gratitude into proof of special connection.
