Chapter 1 - THE FAMILY THAT LOOKED PERFECT

Sophia Carter had always been the responsible sister.

Emily was the emotional one.

That was how the family told it.

Sophia:

organized,

disciplined,

protective,

married first.

Emily:

impulsive,

creative,

single,

always arriving five minutes late.

Their father, Thomas Carter, had died two years earlier.

He left behind:

the mansion,

several commercial properties,

a family investment company,

and a trust worth almost twelve million dollars.

Sophia became primary trustee.

Emily was named successor trustee.

At the time, neither sister cared much about the wording.

Sophia handled numbers.

Emily trusted Sophia.

Then Ryan Carter entered deeper into the family business.

He had married Sophia six years earlier.

Charming.

Polished.

Good with investors.

Thomas never fully trusted him.

Sophia thought that was unfair.

After Thomas died, Ryan became more involved.

He said he was helping.

Sophia let him.

For a while, everything worked.

Then Emily began seeing him alone.

Not publicly.

Not romantically at first.

Ryan called about trust documents.

Asked about old family files.

Then began telling her things.

Sophia is exhausted.

Sophia doesn’t trust me anymore.

Sophia talks about leaving.

Emily resisted.

Ryan persisted.

One night, after too much wine at a charity dinner, he kissed her.

Emily pulled away.

Then kissed him back.

That was the beginning.

Not an accident.

Not a full affair either.

Three meetings.

Two kisses.

One night in a hotel room where Emily stopped before anything more happened.

Then guilt crushed her.

She told Ryan:

“We tell her.”

He panicked.

“No.”

“Then this ends.”

“It already has.”

Emily believed him.

Then Sophia found messages.

Not all of them.

Enough.

COME SEE ME.

I MISS YOU.

DON’T TELL SOPHIA YET.

Sophia did not ask first.

She exploded.

The confrontation happened at the mansion pool.

Emily had gone there to confess.

Sophia was already waiting.

And by the time Ryan ran outside, both sisters were standing in the wreckage of exactly the story he wanted them to believe.
